Tobiáš Balkovský

Tobiáš Balkovský began studying cello at the age of six with Marek Novák of the Czech Philharmonic.

He is currently a first-year student at the Prague Conservatory in the class of Tomáš Strašil. At the Jan Vychytil International Cello Competition, he won first prizes in 2018–2022 and again in 2025. At the Heran Cello Competition 2025, he became a laureate, having won first prize there three years earlier. His further achievements include first place at the Youth and Bohuslav Martinů Competition (2025), the Mahler Cello Competition (2022), victory in the national round of the Czech Music School Competition (2024), and first prize in the national chamber music round of the same competition (2023). He participated in the MenART Academy and in the Czech Philharmonic project Czech Philharmonic Plays with Music School Students. He performs as a soloist with the Příbram Philharmonic, and highlights of his experiences include concerts with the Czech Philharmonic Quartet. Tobiáš has appeared at festivals such as Encounters with Music, Smetana’s Litomyšl, MenART Music Odyssey, concerts hosted by Count František Kinský, the Mendelssohn Musikwoche 2025 in Wengen, Switzerland, and at the press conference of the Prague Spring Festival.
